The Pender County Office of Emergency Management urges all residents to stay off the roads as Hurricane Matthew impacts the region.

“We are continuing to track Hurricane Matthew,” said Tom Collins, Pender County Emergency Manager. “We are anticipating flash floods, road closures, heavy rains, toppled trees, and possible power outages.”

Each year flooding causes more deaths than any other weather hazard. Most of these drownings could be prevented if people better understood the force and power of rushing floodwater, according to FEMA. Whether driving or walking, save your life, and the lives of your children and other family members or traveling companions.

HAMPSTEAD – The northern segment of the proposed Hampstead Bypass will be included in the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) draft 10-year transportation plan.

“The Pender County commissioners have been strong advocates for the Hampstead Bypass,” said George Brown, chairman, speaking on behalf of the board of county commissioners. “This has been a number one priority for our board of commissioners for many years.”

This week’s NCDOT’s announcement to include the northern sector of the US Hwy 17 Hampstead Bypass from NC Hwy 210 to US Hwy 17 north of Hampstead was welcomed news to county officials.

BURGAW – Pender County recently unveiled a new marketing brand and a new tagline, “Find Your Treasure.”

“Pender County is diverse,” said Randell Woodruff, county manager. “We knew it would be a challenge to find a comprehensive design that included our vast agriculture and coastal lands.”

Ford Design Group, based in Wilmington, created a design that encompassed all of Pender County.

Greg Ford and Foster Barker used the shape of a pin-drop, similar to the drop pins used in mapping software to indicate “this is your destination.” The pin-drop, a carapace of a sea turtle, contains the rich agricultural fields, a bright sun, and the sky is also a wave.
