Environmental Health is an important component of the Public Health Department, and provides: 1. On-site wastewater services to the community for the evaluation and permitting of soils for septic systems; 2. Inspection of food handling establishments for the maintenance of sanitary food handling practices; 3. Swimming Pool Inspections; and 4.Water well monitoring and approvals. Environmental Health Specialists are also actively involved in a county wide program to sample ambient water ways for pollution and drinking water for bacterial and chemical contaminants. Environmental Specialists also serve on the blood lead poisoning team to investigate potential exposures to environmental lead by children in schools, day cares, and head start programs.
On-Site Wastewater Program
The On-Site Wastewater Program is responsible for protecting the safety and quality of drinking water by ensuring that all septic systems and drinking water wells in the county are appropriately designed, constructed, and safely operated. Environmental Health Specialists (EHS) provide technical guidance and counseling on new septic systems, and on the repair and maintenance of old systems. EHS's conduct appropriate soil tests to determine the suitability of a property for a septic system.
Food and Lodging Program
The Food and Lodging Program manages inspections of food handling establishments, including restaurants, food and drink stands, meat and seafood markets, school cafeterias, the County Jail, Pender Memorial Hospital, child day care centers, residential care facilities and rest/nursing homes.
The "Golden A Award" was started in calendar year 2001. This award is given to any establishment that receives a score of 98 or better in every quarter of the Calendar Year that the establishment is eligible for an inspection.
