Laboratory Services

The Laboratory provides important technical support to health department clinic and community health programs. Procedures performed in the laboratory include wet smears for trichomnas, yeast and other cellular components; blood chemistry profiles, glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride testing; complete urinalysis, bacteriological culturing of throats and urines; pregnancy testing; and blood lead samples. Proficiency testing in all analytical areas is required for the laboratory to operate under “Clinical Laboratory Act,” or CLIA certificate. A total of six proficiency tests are completed each Fiscal year. Quality Control is performed on all tests daily. The health department laboratory provides testing in direct support of the Maternity, Family Planning, Child Health, WIC, Adult Health, STD and Communicable Disease Clinics. The laboratory provides HIV testing with the laboratory drawing and processing blood samples and the State Laboratory of Public Health performing the tests. The laboratory provides further use of the microscope with the fern test to check amniotic fluid leakage on Maternity patients. The laboratory monitors a tracking system of all specimens leaving the lab.
