Animal Shelter
The animal shelter is open 7 days a week (except holidays) for surrenders, adoptions and to administer Rabies vaccines. The shelter is here to assist Pender County Animal Control and we take animals belonging to Pender County residents or animals found in Pender County.
We do not accept out-of-county animals!
Animals brought in by PCAC, or brought in by the public with no proof of ownership, are held for 72 hours (3 consecutive days) per state law to give the owners time to find their pet. Animals unclaimed become county property and are evaluated for health and temperament. If they pass, they are placed up for adoption; if they are aggressive or have illnesses/injuries that exceed our abilities to treat at the shelter, they are euthanized. If the number of animals coming into the shelter exceeds the space we have to hold them, we may have to euthanize animals for space to comply with state laws.

Pender County Animal Control
Animal Control is a division of the Pender County Sheriff's Department. Animal Control Officers are on duty to respond to reports of rabid animals, dog, and cat bites, injured and abused animals, stray/roaming animals, and animals that are considered to be a threat to public health and safety. Rabies (Hydrophobia lyssa) is a major health concern in Pender County. Rabies is an invariably fatal acute viral disease endemic in wildlife (raccoons, bats, foxes, bobcats, etc.) in Pender County. To prevent the spread of the Rabies virus, all pets (indoor and outdoor) should be vaccinated against the disease by four months of age. Vaccines can be done at the Pender County Animal Shelter at 3280 New Savannah Road, Burgaw, NC 28425, for residents the fee is $5 per dog/cat/ferret; $10 for out of county residents.
Animal Control Officers also impound stray and unwanted animals and house them at the Pender County Animal Shelter.
