The Pender County Library and Historical Society will host historian Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr.

Pender County Library and the Pender County Historical Society and Museum will host historian Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr. on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. for a  Older man in front of american flag public talk on the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, a pivotal early victory for Patriot forces during the American Revolution.

The program will take place in the large meeting room at the Main Library, located at 103 S. Cowan St. in Burgaw. The event is free and open to the public.

A native Wilmingtonian, Dr. Fonvielle is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and is widely respected for his engaging scholarship on the Cape Fear region’s Revolutionary War and Civil War history. Known for his accessible storytelling and deep local expertise, he is the author of numerous works on North Carolina and regional history and is a sought-after speaker throughout the state. His forthcoming book, We Gave Them a Very Proper Reception: The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge and the Coming of the American Revolution in North Carolina, explores the significance of the battle and its broader historical context.

Dr. Fonvielle will have a selection of his previous historical works available for purchase at the event.

Prior to the talk, the Library will host a reception from 5:00–6:00 p.m. at the Dallas Herring Library Annex, located across the street at 108 S. Cowan St. The reception will feature displays of library materials related to the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge and the broader Revolutionary era.

This event offers community members an opportunity to explore a defining moment in North Carolina and American history through the insights of one of the region’s most respected historians.
