Animals brought in by PCAC, or brought in by the public with no proof of ownership, are held for 72 hours (3 consecutive days) per state law to give the owners time to find their pet.  Animals unclaimed become county property and are evaluated for health & temperament.  If they pass, they are placed up for adoption; if they are aggressive or have illness/injuries that exceed our abilities to treat at the shelter, they are euthanized.  If the number of animals coming into the shelter exceeds the space we have to hold them, we may have to euthanize animals for space to comply with state laws.

Pender County Animal Control

Animal Control is a division of the Pender County Sheriff Department.  Animal Control Officers are on duty to respond to reports of rabid animals, dog and cat bites, injured and abused animals, stray/roaming animals and animals that are considered to be a threat to public health and safety. Rabies, (Hydrophobia lyssa) is a major health concern in Pender County. Rabies is an invariably fatal acute viral disease that is endemic in wildlife (raccoons, bats, foxes, bobcats, etc.) in Pender County. In order to prevent the spread of the Rabies virus all pets (indoor and outdoor) should be vaccinated against the disease by 4 months of age. Vaccines can be done at the Pender County Animal Shelter located at 3280 New Savannah Rd, Burgaw, NC 28425 for $5.00 per dog/cat/ferret.
