This Year’s Theme: “Charge Into Fire Safety™”
Pender County, NC – October marks Fire Prevention Month, a time when communities across the nation come together to raise awareness about preventing fires and saving lives. This year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has introduced the theme “Charge Into Fire Safety™”, highlighting the growing importance of safe practices around battery-powered devices and the dangers of lithium-ion battery fires.
“From cell phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, rechargeable batteries are part of our everyday lives,” said Amy Burton, Pender County Fire Marshal. “But with convenience comes responsibility. Improper charging, damaged batteries, or unsafe storage can lead to devastating fires. Fire Prevention Month is the perfect time to learn how to keep your family and community safe.”
Key Safety Tips from NFPA and the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office:
- Only use the charger that came with your device. Substituting or using off-brand chargers can increase the risk of overheating and fire.
- Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces. Avoid charging on beds, couches, or under pillows where heat can build up.
- Do not charge unattended or overnight. Stay nearby while devices are charging.
- Replace damaged batteries immediately. Swelling, overheating, or strange odors are warning signs.
- Store e-bikes, scooters, and large battery-powered equipment outdoors if possible. Never block exits with charging equipment.
Community Outreach
Throughout October, the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office will share educational resources, safety demonstrations, and outreach events in partnership with local fire departments and schools. Residents can follow along on the Fire Marshal’s Office social media pages for weekly safety messages, tips, and event updates.
“Fire safety is about being proactive, not reactive,” Burton emphasized. “By making small changes to how we use and charge devices, we can prevent dangerous situations before they start. Together, we can ‘Charge Into Fire Safety™’ and protect what matters most—our families, our homes, and our community.”
